ABOUT THE WEIPA BOWLS CLUB

When in town, a visit to Weipa Bowls Club is highly recommended in order to get a real feel for the community and the people who live here. As a mining town, Weipa is home – either temporarily or permanently – to a very youthful and energetic population.

The club itself is renowned as a place to get together with old or new friends, to play bowls, enjoy a meal or a drink and to pass some well-deserved leisure time.

The Club Bar is where we show all the Grand Finals on the big screen TVs – rugby, AFL, UFC, cricket, boxing, motorsports, soccer and other sports. All major events are available as screened on Fox, Sky and regular channels.

We serve a variety of delicious, quality meals in our restaurant and offer plenty of free activities. Every Monday night is Bingo Night, starting at 7pm with two major Jackpots. We also have weekly raffles plus a year round entertainment program.

As a lawn bowls venue, Weipa Bowls Club is nationally recognised for the quality of our two outdoor greens. We host a number of Bowls Australia events every year with $40,000 in prize money up for grabs.

Weipa Bowls Club is proud to host Night Bowls every Wednesday Night at 6.30pm. Make sure to have your Name down by 6pm. Sunday is social Bowls starting at 9.30am. Please have your Name down by 9am. A small Fee of $10 will provide you with a fun round of Bowls and a beautiful Lunch provided by our Club Restaurant ‘Capers’.

Visitors are always welcome to drop in and enjoy the club’s facilities and we always look forward to meeting new friends.

The Club is staffed by 38 casual and full-time staff including management, administration, bar, food and security personnel.

Club History

In 1967, three years after the commercial mining of bauxite began in earnest in Cape York Peninsula, Weipa Bowls Club was incorporated with the intent of providing a sporting and social outlet for the workers of Weipa. Now, 45 years on, the Club continues to serve the town’s hard workers and, increasingly, those at management level. Many of our members and guests are employees of Rio Tinto, Alcan and the town’s infrastructure and service providers including the hospitals, schools and government services such as the detention centre.
